Creating your own artwork is cost effective, rewarding and enjoyable. But before you get going it’s best to have clearly in mind what your objective is and what you want to achieve from the advertising campaign. Is it to create customer awareness, promote a specific product or to draw attention to a promotion? And who do you consider to be the target customer?
With a specific group of people in mind you can describe the kind of relationship they will have with your product or service. What should you include in your roller banner design?

Only one high quality image is needed which stands out and catches attention and the company logo should be very clear and distinctive.
The eye is naturally drawn to something colourful and adding shades to your design that contrast or compliment will attract attention and draw the reader in. Give thought to which colours you use as some can have a negative effect psychologically and others are hard to read in certain lights, e.g.; yellow. When it comes to the layout, plan your design according to the ‘rule of thirds’ whereby the entire space is divided into three horizontally and vertically. Images and key elements are positioned at the intersections of these imaginary lines to create a well- balanced, aesthetically pleasing piece of work.
The focal point, which could be a heading, question or image should be positioned at eye level to naturally draw the eye to it. The logo needs to be at the top of the design and contact details and a call to action towards the bottom of the second third. Leave the bottom third blank for roller banners or any floor standing display as its difficult to read content lower down.

Yes. It might not be ‘print ready’ or high resolution, but it will give your designer a clear idea of what you would like on the banner, providing a good starting place for them to recreate your design to print ready standards. This will in turn save you time and money.
Which Fonts are best?
With so many fonts available to download online, sometimes for free, it can be hard to choose and easy to get carried away. Focus on simplicity and maximum readability when selecting the fonts. The aim is to attract attention from afar, so stick with well-known classic fonts and do not use more than two font types per design.
Serif fonts are easy to read and sans-serif fonts like Helvetica, Verdana and Century Gothic are also unfussy and useful for the main copy. Mix it up a little by using a more handwritten font like Lobster Two or Freestyle script for the less important information.
Consider varying the size of your fonts; your title, headline or main message should be bold and larger than contact details and additional information. For example; use 200pt for headline, 125pt for sub-heading, 100pt for additional text. Copy should be arranged in short sentences and read from left to right and top to bottom. It’s suggested that spacing size should be two points higher than your font size.
Will photos taken on my mobile phone be ok to use on my roller banner design?
No. Photos may look great on the small screen of your mobile phone, but they will be too small for printing on your roller banner. If the image is too low in resolution your image will pixelate and be indiscernible.
If you would like to take your own photographs but do not own a professional camera, most digital cameras have high quality settings and automatic focus functionality. Your imagery should ideally be saved at 300dpi (dots per inch), although anything above 150dpi will be suitable for large format printing. Check your camera settings and alter to large, high or if you have it, RAW to allow for greater editing. The photos will take up more memory but will result in a better quality of photo for use on larger printed items like roller banners. Save your image as a high-resolution jpeg. Don’t be tempted to copy and paste imagery from a website, Website imagery will be lower quality than you need and trying to copy, paste and resize will not work.Not only this but you need to check on the usage licensing details. What software can I use to create my ad or design?
